FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Do I Need A Coach?
A: All the information needed to become a successful multisport athlete is available to you.  Researching to find the information that applies to your situation can be difficult.  A coach will gather and present the information you need, at the appropriate time, while guiding you through a development program.  The value of a coach is found in his/her ability to teach you skills, provide insight, and guide you safely through the sport of triathlon in a way that saves you the time and effort of trial and error learning.

Q: How Can A Coach Help?
A: People come to the sport for many different reasons.  Some come to race.  Some come to lose weight.  Some come for the lifestyle.  Athletes will have different development paths depending on their specific goals.  A coach offers you a broader view of which skills will have the most impact on your specific development and applies them within a training plan.

Q: What Is It Like To Be Coached?
A: Coaching programs vary.  My program will do whatever is needed.  The program begins with goal-setting and assessments.  After a fitness testing session you will receive a customized development program.  We will meet as needed for training and drill sessions.  Regular communications to analyze workout performance to enforce needed skills and to educate about the sport will ensure you are continuing on an appropriate path.  And the program will continue with support through completion of your goal race.

Q: Do You Have A Training Philosophy?
A: Definitely.  At it's simplest, the key to multisport training is understanding that success in the sport is a test of efficiency.  A well-designed training program must address the athlete's need to improve efficiency in every aspect of the sport, not just swim/bike/run.

Q: How Are You Different?
A: I believe my technical and balanced approach is a new development that caters to the next generation of triathletes.  Triathletes today want to do well and learn quickly, but do not have unlimited time to apply to their development.  My type of coaching optimizes the time available.  Since I'm not in the business with the sole intent of making money, I don't use a one-size-fits-all program.  I'm a student of the sport and believe the most effective coach is one that interacts, listens, and teaches you how to be a multisport athlete.

Q: What Are TrImps?
A: TrImps are a measure of workout intentsity.  (more info here).  TrImps are used as the foundation for training plan development to ensure you are maximizing your physiological development, while preventing injury.

Q: Who Is Your Ideal Client?
A: There is no ideal client; everyone comes to the sport with a different view of what a coach is supposed to be.  If you communicate well, stay open-minded, and stick to your development plan, you will succeed.

Q: What Level Of Athlete Do You Coach?
A: Every level athlete has the opportunity to improve.  There are distinctly different development needs for social, recreational, and competitive triathletes.  Good coaching will help you identify what areas need the most improvement, then address them.

Q: What Are Your Coaching Qualifications?
A: I've been a USAT Level I certified coach for more than three years.  Certification attests that I am competent in triathlon coaching and training concepts, training systems, event-specific skill development, planning, periodization, coaching philosophy and ethics.  In addition, my passion for the sport, my racing and coaching experience, my MBA, and my engineering degree, assure that I'm just the right amount of tri-geek to help you succeed.  Please ask for references, I'm happy to share them.

Q: What Triathlon Experience Do You Have?
A: In 1996, I suffered through my first race, an international distance event in Erie, PA.  As I have developed through 2011 I've competed in the South Carolina Setup Series, won the Upper Palmetto Y Sprint Series, and enjoyed the journey of iron-distance racing.  The experience of racing and coaching has been an amazing ride that I hope to help others enjoy.
